What brought you to the Outer Banks? I moved to Dare County on January 1, 1980. I was working my first U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service job at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern New York, and it was simply too cold for me! I contacted FWS in Asheville, N.C., and requested a transfer south. They asked me about Pea Island and said it was near Nags Head. My response was, "I've heard of Nags Head - sure, I'll go there." I married a commercial fisherman and started a family. I realized early on there was likely no better place to raise a family so I stayed. It's the only place I have ever felt was home.
